MATA WANTS GOLD
Chelsea midfielder Juan Mata has said that he wants to win the Olympic tournament with the Spanish national team, which would show that the Spanish national team is the best team in the world. Spain recently completed a hat-trick of major titles by winning the Euro 2012 after beating Italy 4-0 in the final. It means that they have now lifted the Euro 2008, FIFA World Cup 2010, and Euro 2012. They are now rightly regarded as the best team in the world, but Chelsea midfielder Juan Mata has said that the national team will be able to cement their place strongly if they win the Olympic tournament in London.
Juan Mata is one of the three over the age of 23 players taking part in the tournament for Spain. Juan Mata comes on the back of the victory in the Euro 2012, in which he scored in the final. It has been a memorable season for the former Valencia midfielder after he has already won the FA Cup and the Champions League titles with his club team Chelsea. He has, however, has said that he still hungry for more trophies. The 24-year-old is going to come up against the likes of his Chelsea teammates like Daniel Sturridge and Ryan Bertrand.
“We’re not just looking for a magic moment. We want to win gold to show there is no doubt that Spain are the best football nation in the world. We can cope with the pressure of being favourites. Everyone is talking about a Spain v Brazil final but our opponents are not important to me. We’ll take it match by match. Team GB have great players and have the extra advantage of playing at home. They have a chance of winning,” said Mata in the press conference leading up to the tournament.
